DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta was formed in 1958 and graduated twenty on students in its first class (1960). The department now graduates an average of 90 students annually, about half of whom obtain degrees under the co-operative education program. The staff includes 24 academics and 16 support staff. External support for research is approximately $800.000 annually.

Research activities of department staff involve: computational fluid mechanics, including applications to the deposition of therapeutic aerosols in human lungs, ultra low pollution combustion, industrial particle laden flows, aerodynamics, surface thermodynamics (with applications to enhanced oil recovery), bioadhesion, groundwater pollution control, thin film studies in microelectronics and continuum mechanics.
